Remembering Village Shops

A Study of Combe Down from the collected memories of residents

Edited by Richard Read

The result of over 3 years of research by the Society, this is a fascinating collection of memories of the old shops on Combe Down from members and other residents, with the facts on location and timing corroborated from Post Office Directories, Parish Magazines and old maps.  Over 60 locations in the village housed retail establishments of some kind at one time or another.  The input was edited by Richard Read and includes a Foreword from Stuart Burroughs, Director of the Museum of Bath at Work in which he calls our work “an exemplar of local historical research.”

  2. Hello,

I am currently researching my family tree and believe that my maternal Great, Great Grandparents owned the Hadley Arms at some time in the late 19th Century.

If anyone were able to help me in my amateur research I would be most grateful!

    Kind regards,

    Rebecca
